Concept Based Music Video and Textual Analysis

Concept based music videos tend to have no storyline, they are generally a random concept and sometimes tends to not tie in with the band or theme of the song at all.

This is a style of music video that is based around a single concept or idea. These types of videos tend to be fairly unusual or utilise a particular editing or filming technique. It’s not often you get a purely conceptual music video as the commercial world demands things to be a bit more accessible and reveal more about the artist.

Diane Birch - Valentino

This video is a concept music video based around a projector and the different life within. The camera is constantly in the same position although normally this would not make an interesting music video in the case it does, they don't need a range of shots to make this video unique and stand out because it does it on it's own. The lighting is enhanced but at the same is still very natural and doesn't make the music video seem too staged and set up. The use of mise en scene within this video is very important though, they use of costume is very important. The factor of her starting in a red coast and ending back in the red coat at the end of the video is important because it creates the image that it was in fact an imaginary world and its not real. Also clothing plays an important part as she goes into the screen she changes clothing from outdoor clothing to instantly taking her coat of which shows a great transition when editing. Another important part is the props used - they clearly have the set in which everything is in it but when they put the projector up the set stays the same just making it a real life imagination. They props of the frames plays an important as well as the keyboard - one minute she will be on the outside of the screen holding an imaginary object but when she enters the imaginary world it comes to life when she is holding the keyboard. The frame also plays an important part as when she holds it she appears to be an ultra ego - the villain. The grammar phone initially starts the music although it actually wouldn't be playing through it, this makes the video seem more life like within with objects that are used.

Through the editing stage they have added words which appear over the screen as well as drawing which creates the aspect that it is constructed. They also match the lyrics to what she is doing or they will plainly just write them on the screen. for example 'throwing daisies in the air' they draw cartoon daises then pretends to throw they. Another one is 'My tears don't show' this is written on the screen as she says it.

I like the idea of using the green screen within the frame and making another face over the top of my characters face making the video fun and different.

Goodwin's Theory.

Here I have found a great presentation of the internet to help me when analyzing music videos. It is Goodwin's theory and his 7 ideas written down with examples.

My Target Audience

My target audience is around the age of 15 to 22 however you will always find a few anomalies where people older than 22 will like the artist so therefore I can't make my music video too limited to its appeal. I have made a target audience poster in which I believe whom my target audience are and what they would be interested in and are people in which my product would be aimed at.

This is the overall look of my target audience I have include several picture of many things that my audience would like and do.

I have included pictures of friendship groups that are likely to be fans together and go to gigs and concerts together to see artists. There are also a few pictures of Paolo Nutini himself that features him at festivals in which my target audience would be likely to see him there.

I have also included pictures of another band 'Two Door Cinema Club' which they are likely to be into.

I have included pictures taken from films like Harry Potter which where around in the time of my audience's generation when growing up. This would be a popular film for them to see and they would have likely seen all Harry Potter films.

There are also pictures of Ian Somerhalder featuring in TV series like Lost and The Vampire Diaries in which I think my audience would watch so therefore I included a character that they would like.

I have also included some popular art which I think my audience would enjoy. They are different pieces of art that they are likely to buy and hang on their walls.

I think my audience would be up to date with technology therefore I felt it necessary to include some of the latest gadgets for example touch screen phones and new laptops.

I have also featured characters from inbetweeners as I feel that my audience would be in the hit TV shows and this show is really aimed at their age as it features characters of their age and scenarios that teenagers would often be in. It is a comedy so therefore it appeals to the fun side of my audience.

I could also imagine my audience to not only be into music and listen to it but I feel they are more likely to create music themselves and therefore I have included guitars so show that they can make their own music although they may be influenced by Paolo Nutini.

I thought that my audience would be fashion orientated so therefore I found it necessary that I used recent fashion trends and fashion icons for example the Olsen twins, Beyonce and Rihanna that our audience would be interested in, admire and inspire to be. They may also like the artists music themselves.

Ancillary Texts

Digipaks

What you would expect to see in a digipak?

  • The record label
  • Pictures of the artist/band
  • CD logo
  • The price
  • A website link
  • Credit
  • Recording information

Paolo Nutini's Album Art

Paolo Nutini clearly sticks to the same colours when creating a digipak. So therefore you would carry out using these colours as they are representative of him.

Coldplay's Album Art
I like the album art for cold play, I love the colours used as they stand out and are fun and make a interesting cover that is very attractive.

Marina and the Diamonds

All the digipaks released by Marina and the Diamonds are very cohesive and feature her as an artist with patterned backgrounds and it features the same writing throughout them all. If I were to do one of her songs and create a digipak then it would be necessary that I stick to this theme.

Websites

  • Band logo's at the top and they appear large
  • Links to pages on the website for example home, about/bio, gigs, videos, photos/gallery, merchandise store, forum
  • Main feature or video clip
  • The home page would be predominately catered around a new single/album
  • The use of still advertisement, videos and links
  • The key is the home page which need to be simple and eye catching so dans are not swapped with information
  • Easy to navigate
  • Strong design that might be minimalistic

Paolo Nutini's Website

The artists website clearly shows the link between the artwork used and the album art of his most recent album Sunny Side Up. It shows easy links between pages on the side bar which are clearly visible. It also is coherent with the style of writing used when illustrating his name they use the same style font but play around with the use of colours.

Coldplay's Website

Coldplays website is representative of their new album. It features links to everything and it has been made user friendly. It has recent music videos as the main feature which you can see - this helps promote their new single.

Marina and the diamonds

Marina and the diamonds clearly is promoting her new album that is coming out in 2012. The colours are representative of her new song released 'radioactive' which features similar colours and her EP features the same backgrond. It also promotes her videos like every artists website should.

Magazine Adverts

  • They get the customers attention
  • The use of colour
  • Make it easy for the customer to reach and order the product

Coldplay's magazine advert for Mylo Xyloto

Coldplay's magazine advert is also coherent with the digipak and the website - it features the albums name, album title and dates. It's main purpose it to attract attention in which it does with the use of bright colours and interesting use of artwork.

Marina and the diamonds

Marina and the diamonds magazine advert features the artwork taken from her first album with the same writing always used.
